Meg Ryan, blonde-haired and blue-eyed
Meg Ryan, blonde-haired and blue-eyed, was born Margaret Mary Emily Hyra in
Fairfield Connecticut to Susan (Duggan) the former actor and English teacher
and Harry Hyra, a maths teacher. Her family heritage includes Ruthenian, Polish
and Irish as well as German. ("Hyra") is her Ruthenian surname, and
"Ryan" is her maternal grandmother's maiden. Meg graduated from
Bethel high school, Bethel in June 1979. When she moved to New York, she
attended New York University where she majored in journalism. Meg Ryan was her
name, and she began acting to earn extra money during her time at university.
Her debut on screen came in 1981, making a brief appearance as Candice Bergen’s
daughter in George Cukor's final film Rich and Famous (1981). She was an
auditioned actress and named Betsy in the daily television soap As the World
turns (1956). From 1982 to 1984, she was a member of the show's cast. Meg was
also part of the TV series One of the Boys (1982), which was quickly ended. She
relocated to Hollywood in 1984 and got an offer to appear on the western series
Wildside (1985). Meg's tiny role in the blockbuster film Top Gun (1986) led to
her being part of Steven Spielberg's Innerspace (1987) where she co-starred
alongside Dennis Quaid. In the remake of D.O.A., she starred in a second time
with Quaid. (1988) and the couple tied the knot on Saint Valentine's Day in
1991. Meg appeared in 1989's When Harry Met Sally... (1989), and the restaurant
scene became famous. Meg was nominated both the Golden Globe and the BAFTA. In
1990, she co-starred with Tom Hanks in Joe Versus the Volcano (1990) and this
time she played three roles as DeDe/Angelica/Patricia. In 1993, Meg starred
with Tom in Sleepless in Seattle (1993), for which she was again nominated for
the Golden Globe. In 1994, Meg decided to act contrary to the norm when she
acted as the alcoholic wife and mother in the film When a Man Loves a Woman
(1994). She went back to being "cute" following that film with I.Q.
(1994) and French Kiss (1995). People Magazine voted Meg as one of the 50 most
beautiful individuals in the world in 1994.
